Red Wine
Red wine contains anthocyanins — strong pigment molecules that bind to textile fibers and oxidize to a permanent brown/purple within minutes. Speed is critical.
Step by step
- 1Act IMMEDIATELY
- 2Sprinkle salt generously on the fresh stain — salt draws wine out of the fibers osmotically
- 3Pour cold water from behind to flush out the rest
- 4Rub in solid soap + baking soda and let sit for 15 minutes
- 5Machine wash as cold as the fabric allows
Tips
Salt works osmotically — it creates a concentration gradient that draws liquid (and pigment) out of the fabric fibers. Baking soda is alkaline and helps break down the anthocyanins' bond. The dryer is lethal: heat polymerizes the pigment molecules into a permanent bond.

Coffee
Coffee contains tannins — polyphenols that bind to textile fibers and oxidize as they dry. A fresh coffee stain is simple; a dried one is chemically bonded to the fabric.
